Stavros Stavropoulos, MD

Stavros Stavropoulos, MD

I decided to pursue a career in medicine to help people in need. I chose to specialize in gastroenterology because it allows me to use minimally invasive procedures to rapidly and successfully treat patients.

I was the first surgeon in the United States to perform a peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), a revolutionary noninvasive endoscopic procedure for achalasia. I have performed the largest volume of POEMs in the U.S., with over one third of our patients coming from across the country and the world.

I pioneered endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic full thickness resection (EFTR) in the U.S. ESD is a procedure to remove early gastric, esophageal, duodenal, and colon cancers without invasive surgery or scarring. EFTR is a nonsurgical procedure to remove submucosal tumors. NYU Winthrop Hospital is one of the leading institutions for interventional endoscopy and endoscopic surgery.

I also treat a variety of other digestive disorders, including cancer, stones, and other conditions of the pancreatobiliary system that require endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. I provide the best care possible to every patient, and treat each one as a member of my own family.

I am proud to be recognized as a fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Gastroenterology Association, and the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. I am active in clinical research and have published more than 100 articles and have been invited to lecture at more than 100 national and international conferences.
